Why Native Cigarettes Burn Faster

How fast does a native cigarette actually burn?

Tested side by side with a stopwatch, a native cigarette smouldering in an ashtray burns 25-30% faster than a Player’s Classic or Du Maurier. From light to butt, a native finishes in roughly 5-7 minutes of pull time. A duty-paid premium typically takes 7-9 minutes. The math: roughly 1 native pack equals 1.4 duty-paid packs in terms of actual smoking time, which is why some smokers report going through more sticks per day after switching.

Why do they burn faster?

Three structural reasons:

  • Coarser tobacco cut – reserve manufacturers shred tobacco wider (about 1.0 mm) versus big-tobacco standards (0.6-0.8 mm). Coarser strands have more air between them and combust faster.
  • Less compaction – the rolling machines on reserve typically run at slightly lower stuffing pressure. Less tightly packed tobacco draws easier and burns hotter.
  • No burn-rate additives – big-tobacco brands use diammonium phosphate or citric acid washes to slow combustion. Reserve brands typically skip these – cleaner tobacco, faster cherry.

The result is a cigarette that lights easier, draws lighter, and runs through faster.

Does this mean lower quality?

No. It means a different manufacturing philosophy. Premium reserve brands intentionally avoid the additives big tobacco uses for shelf appeal and burn control. The trade-off is faster combustion but cleaner taste – many native cigarette smokers describe the smoke as smoother and less chemical-tasting than mainstream brands. Cheap reserve brands burn fast for cost reasons (loose pack, low tobacco mass). Premium reserve brands burn fast for clean reasons. The cigarette feels different in both cases.

How does the nicotine compare?

Native cigarettes deliver roughly the same nicotine per gram of tobacco as any other cigarette – the leaf is sourced from the same Virginia and Burley regions. The faster burn means you absorb that nicotine over less time, so each puff hits harder. Does humidity affect the burn rate?

Yes – significantly. Native cigarettes are typically packed at 11-12% moisture rather than the 13-14% standard for big tobacco. Drier tobacco burns faster. Storing native cigarettes in a humid environment (around 14% RH) slows the burn rate by 15-20%. Conversely, leaving an open pack on the dash in summer accelerates burn to almost double the dry rate. How do you slow the burn?

Three practical adjustments:

  • Store the pack in a sealed container with a small humidor disk (Boveda 75% or similar) for 24 hours before smoking
  • Take shorter, less frequent puffs – the cherry only stays hot while air flows over it
  • Stand the cigarette upright between puffs instead of laying it flat in an ashtray (gravity pulls hot air down through a flat cigarette, accelerating combustion)

None of these tricks change the cigarette itself – they buy back the time difference through technique.

Is the faster burn dangerous?

Not directly. Faster combustion means a slightly hotter cherry, which can increase the level of certain pyrolysis products in the smoke. The increase is measurable in lab conditions and small in real-world health terms. Big-tobacco burn additives were developed partly for fire safety (FSC standards) – native cigarettes do not meet provincial reduced-ignition-propensity testing in most provinces. Practically, never leave a lit native unattended on flammable material.

Why does big tobacco engineer slower-burning cigarettes?

Two reasons. First, fire safety regulations starting in 2005-2007 required Reduced Ignition Propensity (RIP) cigarettes that self-extinguish if neglected. Second, slower-burning sticks let the smoker pace social use – the cigarette lasts the duration of a coffee or a conversation. Shorter smoke time means smokers light a second cigarette sooner, which can spike daily count. Native smokers tend to compensate by smoking slightly fewer sticks but pulling harder on each.

What burn rate should you expect?

Practical expectations for a standard king-size cigarette:

  • Premium duty-paid (Du Maurier, Players Classic): 7-9 minutes
  • Budget duty-paid: 6-7 minutes
  • Premium reserve (Sago, Native): 5.5-7 minutes
  • Budget reserve (DK’s, Putters): 4.5-6 minutes
